Why New England Weather Matters for Painting in MetroWest

Freeze-Thaw and Moisture
Every winter, water gets into cracked caulk, bare wood and open seams, freezes and pushes the paint off from behind. That is why the prep matters so much here: scraping to sound paint, priming bare wood, caulking every seam and replacing rotted trim before a coat goes on. Skip any of that and the south and west walls show it first.

The May to October Exterior Window
Most exterior paints need surface and air temperatures above roughly 50 degrees, including overnight, to cure properly. In Massachusetts that leaves a working window from about May into early October. Exterior work gets booked into that window, and interior work fills the rest of the year, which is why late winter is the best time to get on the spring schedule.

Older Homes and Old Paint
A large share of the homes in Milford, Hopedale, Mendon and the surrounding towns were built before 1978, and disturbing old paint on those homes falls under lead-safe work practice rules. Flexible acrylic exterior finishes move with the wood through freeze-thaw instead of cracking, cedar and redwood need a stain blocking primer so the tannins do not bleed through, and bathrooms and kitchens need moisture resistant finishes.
